Sun Safety

As it is written in the Environmental Working Group’s ‘Guide To Sunscreens’ sunscreen should be your last resort. They also suggest to wear clothes to shield yourself from the UV rays, go outdoors in the morning or late afternoon, find shade or make it, wear sunglasses, check UV index and avoid getting burned.

It doesn’t mean you have to hide underground during summer, don’t get me wrong, it is all about the moderation and to use the sunscreen when it is necessary. There are different believes about it and how your body absorbs Vitamin D.

Now that you know how else you can protect your beautiful skin let’s dive deep in the world of sunscreens. As in all of my blog posts I am not trying to scare you that everything is packed with chemicals, rather just give alternatives for you and encourage you to make your own researches and make decisions for your own very best. So, it is not a secret how mainstream sunscreens cause allergies, cancer, hormone disruption, delayed puberty and the list goes on, as we all know by now. These nasties are most commonly:

  • Oxybenzone: endocrine disruptor, acts like estrogen
  • Octinoxate: hormone-like activity
  • Phenylbenzimidazole: potential to cause cancer
  • Homosalate: Disrupts estrogen, androgen and progesterone
  • Methylchloroisothiazolinone: The American Contact Dermatitis Society named it “allergen of the year” in 2013.
  • Octocrylene: irritant
  • Parabens

For more information and research read this summary by EWG.

Belive it or not, you can also protect yourself from sunburnt by avoiding  processed food, sugar and grain and have a Real Food diet, which focused on saturated and monounsaturated fats, omega-3 rich foods and lots of leafy greens.

Also it is fortunate that there are so many honest companies that provides sunscreens without harmful chemicals. Just right below, I show you what is in my sun kit.

I use the spray for kids, since sometimes I spend a whole day outside on the sun working and I always think, if it works on babes, it shall work for me too. All true, I never got sunburnt with this.

Facial sunscreen is necessary, because your face skin requires different attention. Period.

Sunless tanner in Canada, totally necessary! I am still having  hard times adopting the weather conditions here, so as the lack of sun. This product makes me feel so much better when I miss my mediterranean bronze tanned skin.

Click the pictures above for more informations on the Alba Botanica products. I also use their eye gel on my dark circles every single day and I love how it helps instantly and sometimes I accidentally put it in my eyes too half asleep and they do not burn like any commercial products! albaeye

I would love to hear about your experiences! What is your favorite natural sunscreen?

Love,

Panka
